What is Express Entry

Express Entry is an electronic system developed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to manage applications for permanent residence under the following federal immigration programs, and parts of the Provincial Nominee Program.

  •  Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

To be considered, candidates who meet the minimum requirements for at least one Express Entry program must submit an Express Entry profile into the pool of candidates.

Eligible applicants are then assigned a score using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) — a points-based system that assesses your profile based on a number of factors, including your skills, education, language ability, and work experience.

Candidates are assigned a score out of 1200 points. The highest scoring candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence. These invitations are issued by the federal government at regular intervals during the year. This is the final step of the Express Entry Program.

Candidates who receive an ITA must then submit an electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR) through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) web portal within 60 days.

At this stage, you must show proof of the information you provided in the Express Entry profile. You should also confirm that you are still eligible for the program you’ve been invited to apply under.

If anything in your profile changed, you should re-calculate your score before applying online for permanent residence. Some examples of changes that could lower your CSR score include:

  • you no longer have a valid job offer
  • your language test scores have expired or are lower after
  • you were retested you no longer have provincial nomination.

If your recalculated score is less than the lowest score in your round of invitations, you should decline the invitation.

If you decline an invitation, you'll be put back into the Express Entry pool of candidates and will be considered in future rounds of invitations, if you’re still eligible.
