How the program works

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) allows individuals who are qualified in a skilled trade apply for permanent residence in Canada, if they obtain sufficient points under the point score system.

To be eligible for the program, candidates must meet the following criterion:

  • meet language skills for writing, reading, listening and speaking
  • have at least 2 years of full-time work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade in the past 5 years
  • completed paid work (volunteer work or unpaid internships don’t count)
  • meet the job requirements for that skilled trade
  • have a valid job offer of full-time employment for at least 1 year or a certificate of qualification in that trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority

What is a qualifying job for the Federal Skilled Trades Program?

Skilled trades for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are organized under these groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC):

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers

What is Express Entry?

The Express Entry pool manages permanent residence applications for immigrants who can fill jobs where there is a lack of available skilled Canadian workers. The Federal Skilled Trades Program is one out of three economic programs within the online Express Entry system.

Applicants are ranked in the Express Entry pool using a points-based system. The government will invite people to apply for permanent residence based on your score and rank in the Express Entry pool. You cannot apply for the program directly.

The following federal economic immigration programs use the Express Entry system:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
